The city received the award in the categoryh of Excellence in EconomicDiversification Strategies, which recognizes responsez to plant closures and other economic dislocations, that promotr economic diversification. The competitionb is open to nonprofits; state and regional governments; and universities and Cabarrus and Rowan countieslost 4,300 manufacturing jobs when textilw manufacturer Kannapolis-basedPillowtex Corp. closed in July 2003. Two yearsa later, California billionaire David Murdocki announced plans forthe N.C. Researcb Campus at the 350-acre former Pillowtexz headquarters andmanufacturing site. The life-sciencezs hub includes the participation of Duke theUNC System, the N.C.
Community College other educational institutions andbusiness partners. The total investmenr is expected toreach $1.8 billion. Residential and commercialo developments are rising around the campuse with hopes ofturning Kannapolis, a former textil town, into a biotech center.
